In November 2025, a rare Asiatic caracal was reported from the Ramgarh area of Jaisalmer district in Rajasthan. The sighting drew attention to the conservation of this elusive wild cat in India's arid landscapes.
नवंबर 2025 में राजस्थान के जैसलमेर जिले के रामगढ़ क्षेत्र में दुर्लभ एशियाई कैराकल दिखाई देने की सूचना मिली। इस घटना ने भारत के शुष्क क्षेत्रों में रहने वाली इस दुर्लभ जंगली बिल्ली के संरक्षण की ओर ध्यान आकर्षित किया।
What is a Caracal? | कैराकल क्या है?
The caracal is a medium-sized wild cat known for its long legs, reddish-brown coat and distinctive black ear tufts. Its scientific name is Caracal caracal. It is sometimes called the desert lynx, although it is not a true lynx.
कैराकल मध्यम आकार की जंगली बिल्ली है। इसकी पहचान लंबे पैरों, लाल-भूरे बालों और कानों के सिरों पर काले बालों के गुच्छों से होती है। इसका वैज्ञानिक नाम Caracal caracal है। इसे कभी-कभी मरुस्थलीय लिंक्स कहा जाता है, लेकिन यह वास्तविक लिंक्स नहीं है।
Meaning of Siya Gosh | सियाहगोश का अर्थ
In India, the caracal is also called siya gosh or siyahgosh, a name of Persian origin meaning black ear.
भारत में कैराकल को सियाहगोश भी कहा जाता है। यह फ़ारसी मूल का नाम है, जिसका अर्थ काला कान होता है।
Global Distribution | वैश्विक वितरण
The species occurs across parts of Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and southwestern Asia, including northwestern India and Pakistan. Its distribution is discontinuous because suitable habitats are separated by geographical and human-made barriers.
यह प्रजाति अफ्रीका, मध्य पूर्व, मध्य एशिया तथा दक्षिण-पश्चिम एशिया के कुछ भागों में पाई जाती है। इसके वितरण क्षेत्र में उत्तर-पश्चिमी भारत और पाकिस्तान भी शामिल हैं। उपयुक्त आवासों के बीच भौगोलिक तथा मानव-निर्मित बाधाओं के कारण इसका वितरण लगातार एक समान नहीं है।
Distribution in India | भारत में वितरण
India's remaining caracal population is associated mainly with Rajasthan and Gujarat. The species has historically occurred in other parts of India, but confirmed contemporary records are scarce. Published estimates of the remaining Indian population are very small and should be treated as approximate rather than a complete census.
भारत में कैराकल की शेष आबादी मुख्यतः राजस्थान और गुजरात से संबंधित है। ऐतिहासिक रूप से यह देश के अन्य क्षेत्रों में भी पाया जाता था, लेकिन वर्तमान में इसकी पुष्टि वाले अभिलेख बहुत कम हैं। भारत में इसकी शेष संख्या के प्रकाशित अनुमान अत्यंत कम हैं; इन्हें पूर्ण गणना के बजाय अनुमान माना जाना चाहिए।
Habitat | प्राकृतिक आवास
Caracals inhabit semi-deserts, dry grasslands, savannahs, scrublands, steppes and some open woodland habitats. They generally favour landscapes that provide cover for stalking prey.
कैराकल अर्ध-मरुस्थलों, शुष्क घास के मैदानों, सवाना, झाड़ीदार क्षेत्रों, स्टेपी तथा कुछ खुले वन क्षेत्रों में रहते हैं। वे ऐसे भू-दृश्यों को प्राथमिकता देते हैं जहाँ शिकार के निकट छिपकर पहुँचने के लिए पर्याप्त आड़ उपलब्ध हो।
Physical Characteristics | शारीरिक विशेषताएँ

Diet and Behaviour | भोजन और व्यवहार
Caracals are carnivores that prey on rodents, hares, birds and other small or medium-sized animals. They can leap vertically to catch birds. They are generally solitary rather than herd-living animals and are often most active during dusk, night and dawn.
कैराकल मांसाहारी हैं। वे कृंतकों, खरगोशों, पक्षियों तथा अन्य छोटे और मध्यम आकार के जीवों का शिकार करते हैं। वे पक्षियों को पकड़ने के लिए ऊँची छलाँग लगा सकते हैं। वे सामान्यतः झुंड के बजाय अकेले रहते हैं और प्रायः संध्या, रात्रि तथा भोर के समय अधिक सक्रिय होते हैं।
Conservation Status | संरक्षण स्थिति
The caracal is classified as Least Concern globally on the IUCN Red List. However, the small and fragmented Indian population faces serious local conservation challenges. A global Least Concern assessment does not mean that every regional population is secure.
अंतरराष्ट्रीय प्रकृति संरक्षण संघ की वैश्विक लाल सूची में कैराकल को कम चिंताजनक श्रेणी में रखा गया है। इसके बावजूद भारत की छोटी और खंडित आबादी गंभीर स्थानीय संरक्षण चुनौतियों का सामना करती है। वैश्विक स्तर पर कम चिंताजनक स्थिति का अर्थ यह नहीं है कि प्रत्येक क्षेत्रीय आबादी सुरक्षित है।
Threats | प्रमुख खतरे
Habitat conversion, fragmentation of grasslands and scrublands, loss of prey, road mortality and human-wildlife conflict can threaten the species.
आवासों का अन्य उपयोगों में परिवर्तन, घास के मैदानों और झाड़ीदार क्षेत्रों का विखंडन, शिकार जीवों की कमी, सड़क दुर्घटनाएँ तथा मानव-वन्यजीव संघर्ष इस प्रजाति के लिए खतरा बन सकते हैं।
