A rare striped hyena, scientifically known as Hyaena hyaena, was recently spotted in the Kali Tiger Reserve in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka.
हाल ही में Karnataka के Uttara Kannada district में स्थित Kali Tiger Reserve में एक दुर्लभ striped hyena देखा गया। इसका वैज्ञानिक नाम Hyaena hyaena है।

The striped hyena is a mammal belonging to the family Hyaenidae. The living hyaenid family includes the striped hyena, spotted hyena, brown hyena and aardwolf.

Appearance | स्वरूप
The striped hyena is generally smaller than the spotted hyena. It has a greyish or pale coat marked with dark vertical stripes over much of the body and legs.
Striped hyena सामान्यतः spotted hyena से छोटा होता है। इसके शरीर और पैरों पर गहरे रंग की खड़ी धारियों वाला धूसर या हल्का coat पाया जाता है।
Distribution | वितरण
The species occurs across parts of South Asia, West Asia, Central Asia and northern and eastern Africa. In South Asia it occurs in countries including India, Nepal and Afghanistan.
यह species South Asia, West Asia, Central Asia तथा northern और eastern Africa के कुछ हिस्सों में पाई जाती है। South Asia में इसका वितरण India, Nepal और Afghanistan सहित कई क्षेत्रों में है।
Habitat | आवास
Striped hyenas inhabit open savannas, grasslands, scrublands, rocky terrain and arid to semi-arid landscapes.

Food Habit | भोजन
The striped hyena is primarily a scavenger and feeds heavily on carrion. It may also consume small animals, fruits and human-associated organic refuse where available.
Striped hyena मुख्य रूप से scavenger है और carrion पर निर्भर करता है। अवसर मिलने पर यह छोटे animals, fruits तथा मानव बस्तियों से संबंधित organic refuse भी खा सकता है।
Behaviour | व्यवहार
Striped hyenas are mainly nocturnal and are often solitary, although they may display limited social organisation. They use scent marking to communicate territorial information.
Striped hyenas मुख्य रूप से nocturnal होते हैं और सामान्यतः अकेले दिखाई देते हैं, यद्यपि उनमें सीमित social organisation भी पाई जाती है। वे territorial information के लिए scent marking का उपयोग करते हैं।
Conservation Status | संरक्षण स्थिति
The striped hyena is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. In India it receives a high level of legal protection under the Wildlife (Protection) Act.
Striped hyena को IUCN Red List में Near Threatened category में रखा गया है। भारत में इसे Wildlife (Protection) Act के अंतर्गत उच्च स्तर की कानूनी सुरक्षा प्राप्त है।
