Konark Sun Temple | कोणार्क सूर्य मंदिर

Location

Konark Sun Temple is located at Konark in Puri district on the coast of Odisha. It is one of India's most celebrated examples of medieval temple architecture.

Dedication

The temple is dedicated to Surya, the Hindu Sun God, and is sometimes described as Surya Devalaya.

Builder

The temple was built in the 13th century during the reign of Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. Construction is generally dated to around the middle of the 13th century, approximately 1250 CE.

Architectural Style

Konark is a masterpiece of the Kalinga tradition of temple architecture associated with Odisha.

Solar Chariot Design

The temple was conceived as a monumental stone chariot of Surya. The structure is famously represented with 24 elaborately carved wheels and horses drawing the solar chariot.

Temple Wheels

The carved wheels are among the temple's best-known features. Their detailed spokes and shadows have been interpreted in relation to timekeeping and solar movement.

Orientation

The temple is oriented towards the east, symbolically connecting the structure with the rising Sun.

Stone Used

Different types of stone were used in the complex, including khondalite, laterite and chlorite. Iron elements were also employed structurally.

Sculptures

The temple contains exceptionally detailed sculptures depicting deities, musicians, dancers, animals, warriors, plants and scenes from social and religious life.

Nata Mandapa

The Nata Mandapa or dancing hall is an important part of the temple complex and reflects the close relationship between temple culture, music and dance in medieval Odisha.

Black Pagoda

European sailors historically referred to Konark as the Black Pagoda. The monument served as a prominent coastal landmark for mariners.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Konark Sun Temple was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1984 because of its outstanding architectural, artistic and cultural significance.

Archaeological Survey of India

The monument is protected and conserved by the Archaeological Survey of India. Conservation work has been carried out over many decades because surviving structures face deterioration caused by age, weathering and the coastal environment.

Chandrabhaga

The nearby Chandrabhaga coast is associated with religious traditions connected with Surya worship. The Chandrabhaga Mela attracts pilgrims, particularly around the period of Magha Saptami.
