The Himalayan black bear is generally treated as a subspecies of the Asian black bear, Ursus thibetanus. The Himalayan form is commonly referred to as Ursus thibetanus laniger.
Himalayan black bear को सामान्यतः Asian black bear Ursus thibetanus की subspecies माना जाता है। Himalayan form को प्रायः Ursus thibetanus laniger कहा जाता है।

The Asian black bear is also commonly known as the Asiatic black bear or moon bear because of the crescent-shaped pale patch on its chest.

The bear has dark, generally black fur and a distinctive whitish or cream V-shaped or crescent-shaped patch on the chest.
