1. Why is Vulture Conservation in News?

International Vulture Awareness Day 2026 was observed in India on 6 September 2026. A national workshop titled 'From Crisis to Recovery – Conserving India’s Vultures' was organised at Panchkula, Haryana. The event brought renewed attention to one of India’s most important wildlife conservation stories—the catastrophic decline of vultures and continuing efforts to restore their populations.

2. Why is this Important for UPSC?

Vulture conservation connects several high-value UPSC Prelims themes: endangered species, food chains, veterinary drugs, biodiversity conservation, ex-situ and in-situ conservation, scavenger ecology, One Health, protected species, conservation breeding and international environmental cooperation.

3. What are Vultures?

Vultures are large birds of prey primarily adapted to scavenging. Unlike predators that generally kill their prey, vultures obtain much of their food from carcasses of dead animals. Their specialised digestive system enables them to consume decomposing animal matter that may contain dangerous microorganisms.

4. Ecological Role of Vultures

Vultures are among nature’s most efficient scavengers. They rapidly remove carcasses from landscapes, facilitate nutrient recycling and reduce the period for which decomposing animal matter remains exposed in the environment.

5. Vultures as an Ecosystem Service

The removal of animal carcasses is an important ecosystem service. Without efficient scavengers, carcasses may remain available for longer periods to feral dogs, rats and other scavengers. Thus, vulture conservation is linked not merely to wildlife protection but also to ecosystem functioning and public health.

6. Vultures and the One Health Approach

The One Health concept recognises the interdependence of human, animal and ecosystem health. Vultures illustrate this relationship particularly well. Veterinary medicines administered to livestock may affect vultures feeding on livestock carcasses, while declining vulture populations can alter carcass disposal systems and potentially influence disease ecology.

7. India's Vulture Diversity

India supports a diverse assemblage of resident and migratory vultures. Important species recorded in India include White-rumped Vulture, Indian or Long-billed Vulture, Slender-billed Vulture, Red-headed Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Himalayan Griffon, Eurasian Griffon, Cinereous Vulture and Bearded Vulture.

8. Nine Vulture Species

For UPSC Prelims, remember that India has traditionally been recognised as supporting 9 species of vultures. Some are resident breeders while others may occur as migrants or seasonal visitors.

9. White-rumped Vulture

The White-rumped Vulture is scientifically known as Gyps bengalensis. It was once extremely widespread across the Indian subcontinent but suffered a catastrophic population decline.

10. Indian Vulture

The Indian Vulture, historically also referred to as the Long-billed Vulture, has the scientific name Gyps indicus. It is another species severely affected by the veterinary-drug crisis.

11. Slender-billed Vulture

The Slender-billed Vulture is Gyps tenuirostris. Together with the White-rumped and Indian vultures, it forms part of the group that experienced extraordinary declines in South Asia.

12. Egyptian Vulture

The Egyptian Vulture is Neophron percnopterus. It is smaller than many Gyps vultures and has a distinctive appearance. It is an important species for UPSC species-based questions.

13. Red-headed Vulture

The Red-headed Vulture is Sarcogyps calvus. Its conservation has also received attention as India broadens vulture conservation beyond the three Gyps species that were initially the primary focus of recovery programmes.

14. Himalayan Griffon

The Himalayan Griffon, Gyps himalayensis, is associated particularly with Himalayan and high-altitude landscapes. It may also occur beyond the Himalayan region under appropriate conditions.

15. Eurasian Griffon

The Eurasian Griffon, Gyps fulvus, is among the vulture species that can be encountered in India, particularly as a visitor in suitable regions.

16. Cinereous Vulture

The Cinereous Vulture, Aegypius monachus, is a large Old World vulture and occurs in India mainly as a winter visitor in several areas.

17. Bearded Vulture

The Bearded Vulture or Lammergeier is Gypaetus barbatus. It is especially associated with mountainous environments and is remarkable for feeding extensively on bones.

18. The Vulture Crisis in India

India witnessed a dramatic collapse of several vulture populations beginning in the 1990s. The decline became one of the most striking examples of a wildlife population crash caused substantially by an unintended consequence of human activity.

19. Scale of Historical Decline

Earlier conservation assessments recorded declines exceeding 95% in some Gyps vulture populations. The decline of the Gyps group was estimated at approximately 97% by 2005 in an earlier Government conservation document.

20. What Caused the Vulture Decline?

A major cause was exposure to toxic veterinary drugs through livestock carcasses. Cattle and other livestock treated shortly before death could retain drug residues in their tissues. Vultures feeding on such carcasses were exposed to these residues.

21. Diclofenac and Vultures

Diclofenac became the most famous example of this problem. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID, which was widely used for treating livestock pain and inflammation.

22. How Did Diclofenac Reach Vultures?

The problem did not primarily arise because diclofenac was intentionally administered to vultures. Livestock received the medicine. When treated animals died and their carcasses were consumed by vultures, the birds ingested drug residues.

23. Why is Diclofenac Toxic?

Diclofenac exposure can cause severe renal damage in susceptible vultures. Kidney failure may result in accumulation of uric acid and deposition of urate crystals in tissues, a condition associated with visceral gout.

24. Important Prelims Trap

Diclofenac is not an insecticide, pesticide or heavy metal. It is an NSAID. UPSC may test this classification because the conservation problem connects pharmacology with wildlife ecology.

25. Food-Chain Pathway

The vulture crisis provides a useful example of how substances introduced into livestock management can affect non-target wildlife through feeding relationships. Livestock treatment therefore became an ecological conservation issue.

26. Veterinary Drug Safety

Vulture conservation requires not only protection of nesting habitats but also ensuring that carcasses available to vultures are free from toxic veterinary-drug residues.

27. Vulture-Safe Veterinary Practices

Vulture-safe veterinary practice involves discouraging or preventing the veterinary use of drugs demonstrated to be harmful to vultures and promoting safer alternatives where scientifically established.

28. Meloxicam

Meloxicam has historically been promoted as a vulture-safe alternative to diclofenac for veterinary use. For Prelims, the contrast between diclofenac and meloxicam is particularly important.

29. Conservation is More Than Drug Control

Although veterinary drugs played a central role in the historical crash, long-term recovery requires a broader approach covering safe food, nesting sites, habitat protection, poisoning risks, electricity infrastructure, conservation breeding, monitoring and community participation.

30. Vulture Safe Zones

A Vulture Safe Zone is a landscape-level conservation approach in which threats to vultures are systematically reduced. A safe zone is not merely a fenced protected area; it requires cooperation across the surrounding landscape.

31. Components of a Vulture Safe Zone

Important components may include vulture-safe veterinary practices, safe carcass availability, monitoring of populations, awareness among veterinarians and livestock owners, protection of nesting and roosting sites, and reduction of poisoning risks.

32. Why Landscape-Level Conservation?

Vultures can travel over large distances in search of food. Protecting only the immediate nesting location is therefore insufficient if the birds encounter toxic carcasses elsewhere in their feeding range.

33. In-situ Conservation

Protection of vultures within natural habitats and the creation of safe landscapes are forms of in-situ conservation. The objective is to maintain viable wild populations within functioning ecosystems.

34. Ex-situ Conservation

Conservation breeding centres represent ex-situ conservation because animals are scientifically managed outside their natural wild environment for breeding, genetic management and eventual recovery efforts.

35. Conservation Breeding

When wild populations decline to extremely low levels, conservation breeding can function as an insurance population. Carefully managed captive populations can preserve genetic diversity and produce individuals for future release.

36. Jatayu Conservation Breeding Centre

The Jatayu Conservation Breeding Centre at Pinjore, Haryana, is a major institution in India’s vulture recovery programme. It is a collaborative initiative involving the Haryana Forest Department and the Bombay Natural History Society.

37. Location of JCBC

For Prelims, remember: Jatayu Conservation Breeding Centre — Pinjore — Haryana.

38. Species at JCBC

The centre has played an important role in conservation breeding of the White-rumped, Indian/Long-billed and Slender-billed vultures.

39. Scientific Management

Activities at the centre include scientific husbandry, artificial incubation, veterinary care, breeding and genetic management.

40. Latest 2025–26 Figure

According to the September 2026 official update, JCBC housed 356 vultures during 2025–26.

41. Breeding Success

During 2025–26, the centre successfully bred 35 vulture chicks.

42. Reintroduction

The official update stated that JCBC released or contributed 87 vultures for reintroduction. Reintroduction is the process of returning conservation-bred animals to suitable wild habitats with the objective of rebuilding viable wild populations.

43. Transfer to Other Institutions

JCBC also transferred 90 vultures to other conservation-breeding institutions, demonstrating that recovery programmes can operate through a network rather than through a single facility.

44. Capacity Building

During 2025–26, the centre trained 1,222 participants belonging to 22 institutions. Technical capacity is essential because successful wildlife recovery requires expertise in veterinary care, genetics, breeding, field monitoring and release protocols.

45. International Vulture Awareness Day 2026

The 2026 Indian observance was held at Panchkula, Haryana, with a national-level workshop focusing on recovery of vulture populations.

46. Theme of the National Workshop

The workshop theme was 'From Crisis to Recovery – Conserving India’s Vultures'. The phrase captures the transition from preventing extinction to rebuilding populations in the wild.

47. Institutions Associated with the 2026 Event

The programme involved the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Central Zoo Authority, Haryana Forest and Wildlife Department, Bombay Natural History Society and Jatayu Conservation Breeding Centre.

48. Central Zoo Authority

The Central Zoo Authority is a statutory body involved in regulation and oversight of zoos and conservation breeding in India. It operates under the broader wildlife conservation framework of the Union Government.

49. Bombay Natural History Society

BNHS is one of India’s longstanding scientific and conservation organisations and has played an important role in research and conservation of vultures.

50. Action Plan for Vulture Conservation in India

India launched the Action Plan for Vulture Conservation in India 2020–2025 in November 2020. It identified priority actions to address threats and strengthen the recovery of vulture populations.

51. Major Objectives of the Action Plan

The Action Plan emphasised prevention of misuse of veterinary NSAIDs, expansion of conservation breeding, establishment of Vulture Safe Zones, dedicated rescue centres, monitoring and greater conservation awareness.

52. Toxic Drug Screening

An important policy principle is that veterinary drugs should be assessed for their potential toxicity to vultures. A drug found harmful to vultures should not continue to create an avoidable conservation threat.

53. Rescue Centres

Dedicated rescue centres can support injured, poisoned or otherwise distressed vultures and contribute to veterinary knowledge relevant to species recovery.

54. Beyond Gyps Species

While early programmes focused strongly on the severely affected Gyps vultures, conservation attention has expanded to species such as the Red-headed and Egyptian vultures.

55. Why Vulture Recovery is Slow

Vultures are relatively slow-breeding birds. Many species mature slowly and generally produce few offspring. Consequently, even after major mortality factors are reduced, population recovery can take many years.

56. K-selected Life History

In ecological terms, vultures broadly display characteristics associated with K-selected species: relatively long lifespan, delayed maturity and low reproductive output. Such species are particularly vulnerable when adult mortality rises sharply.

57. Adult Survival Matters

For long-lived, slowly reproducing birds, survival of adults is critical to population stability. A mortality factor affecting breeding adults can therefore cause severe population decline.

58. Scavenger Guild

Vultures are part of a broader scavenger guild that may include mammals, birds, insects and microorganisms. Changes in one major scavenger group can alter ecological interactions among the others.

59. Carcass Competition

When vultures decline, carcasses can remain accessible for longer to other scavengers. This can change the abundance and behaviour of animals such as feral dogs and potentially alter human-wildlife interactions.

60. Nutrient Cycling

By rapidly consuming carcasses, vultures contribute to nutrient cycling. Nutrients contained in dead animals are redistributed through ecological processes rather than remaining concentrated in decomposing carcasses.

61. Disease Regulation

The rapid removal of carcasses may reduce opportunities for some pathogens and competing scavengers. However, disease relationships are complex, so UPSC answers should avoid claiming that vultures alone prevent all carcass-associated diseases.

62. Vultures and Public Health

The broader lesson is that biodiversity loss can have consequences beyond wildlife. Ecosystem functions performed by species can possess indirect economic and public-health value.

63. Ecosystem Approach

The 2026 conservation message emphasised an ecosystem-oriented model rather than treating species conservation in isolation. Species depend upon food availability, habitat, veterinary practices, communities and wider ecological conditions.

64. Whole-of-Government Approach

Vulture recovery requires coordination between wildlife agencies, veterinary authorities, livestock departments, drug regulators, local administrations and scientific institutions.

65. Whole-of-Society Approach

Government action alone is insufficient. Veterinarians, livestock owners, conservation organisations, local communities, scientists and citizens all influence the safety of vulture landscapes.

66. Role of Veterinarians

Veterinarians are critical because their prescription practices influence which pharmaceutical residues may enter livestock carcasses.

67. Role of Livestock Owners

Livestock owners can contribute by following safe veterinary practices and supporting appropriate carcass-management systems.

68. Role of Local Administration

Local administrations can facilitate awareness, safe carcass management, enforcement, monitoring and coordination among departments.

69. Role of Scientific Institutions

Scientific institutions are essential for population monitoring, toxicological research, genetic management, disease surveillance and evaluation of reintroduction success.

70. Population Monitoring

Conservation success cannot be assessed only by the number of birds produced in captivity. Wild survival, breeding success, dispersal and establishment of self-sustaining populations must also be monitored.

71. PAN-India Vulture Assessment

The Wildlife Institute of India released the final report of the PAN India Assessment and Monitoring of Endangered Species – Vultures in 2025. Such assessments strengthen evidence-based conservation by improving understanding of distribution, populations and threats.

72. Wildlife Institute of India

The Wildlife Institute of India is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. It is located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

73. Reintroduction versus Translocation

Reintroduction generally seeks to restore a species to an area from which it has disappeared or substantially declined. Translocation is a broader term involving intentional movement of organisms from one location to another for conservation or management purposes.

74. Soft Release

In conservation programmes, a soft release may involve an acclimatisation period before animals are fully released into the wild. Such approaches can improve adaptation to local environmental conditions.

75. Post-release Monitoring

Released vultures may be monitored using field observations, identification markers or tracking technology. Monitoring helps determine survival, movement, habitat use and causes of mortality.

76. Genetic Management

Small captive populations face risks such as inbreeding and loss of genetic diversity. Breeding programmes therefore require pedigree and genetic management to preserve long-term population viability.

77. Founder Population

A conservation-breeding programme ideally requires a sufficiently diverse founder population so that future generations retain adequate genetic variation.

78. Conservation Breeding is Not a Substitute for Habitat Safety

Releasing captive-bred vultures into landscapes that still contain toxic drugs or other major threats would undermine recovery. Ex-situ conservation must therefore be linked with in-situ threat reduction.

79. Poisoning Threat

Apart from veterinary drugs, vultures can be harmed by poisoned carcasses and other toxic substances. Poisoning may be intentional or accidental and can kill multiple birds feeding on a single carcass.

80. Electrocution and Collision

Large soaring birds may face collision or electrocution risks associated with electricity and other infrastructure. Infrastructure planning can therefore become part of species conservation.

81. Habitat Disturbance

Disturbance near nesting or roosting sites may reduce breeding success. Landscape planning must therefore consider important nesting cliffs, trees and feeding areas.

82. Food Availability

Recovery depends not simply on abundant carcasses but on safe carcasses. Food availability and food safety are therefore distinct conservation considerations.

83. Safe Carcass Management

Carcass-management systems should minimise toxic exposure while ensuring that disposal practices do not create additional ecological or public-health problems.

84. Vulture Restaurants

In some conservation contexts, designated feeding sites provide vultures with carcasses verified to be safe from harmful veterinary residues. Such feeding stations are sometimes informally described as 'vulture restaurants'.

85. Conservation and Local Communities

Local participation is crucial because communities interact directly with livestock, carcass disposal, veterinary systems and landscapes used by vultures.

86. Traditional Knowledge

Traditional practices concerning livestock and carcass disposal can influence vulture conservation positively or negatively. Conservation programmes should understand local practices rather than imposing purely top-down solutions.

87. Vultures and Cultural Ecology

Vultures have cultural importance in South Asia. The name 'Jatayu' used for the Pinjore breeding centre draws upon the vulture-like heroic figure Jatayu in the Ramayana tradition.

88. Old World Vultures

Indian vultures belong to the group commonly called Old World vultures. They are found in Africa, Asia and Europe and belong primarily to the family Accipitridae.

89. Old World versus New World Vultures

Old World and New World vultures are not simply one geographically divided natural group. Their scavenging adaptations represent an important example of convergent evolution.

90. Convergent Evolution

Convergent evolution occurs when unrelated or distantly related organisms independently evolve similar adaptations because they face similar ecological pressures.

91. Vultures as Keystone Functional Species

Although terminology should be used carefully, vultures perform disproportionately important scavenging functions in many landscapes. Their decline demonstrates how loss of a functional group can reorganise ecosystem processes.

92. Biodiversity and Ecosystem Stability

The vulture case illustrates that biodiversity is not simply a numerical list of species. Different species perform ecological functions, and the disappearance of a functional group may affect ecosystem stability and services.

93. Species Recovery

Recovery means more than preventing immediate extinction. The long-term goal is to establish viable, genetically healthy and self-sustaining populations in the wild.

94. Indicators of Successful Recovery

Useful indicators include increasing wild populations, successful reproduction, improved adult survival, expansion into safe habitats and reduced mortality from human-induced threats.

95. Captive Breeding Numbers Can Mislead

A large captive population does not by itself demonstrate conservation success. The ultimate objective is ecological recovery in the wild.

96. Adaptive Management

Conservation should use adaptive management: interventions are implemented, outcomes monitored, evidence evaluated and strategies modified when necessary.

97. Precautionary Principle

Where credible evidence suggests that a veterinary drug could cause severe damage to an endangered scavenger, precautionary regulation may be justified even while scientific monitoring continues.

98. Polluter Pays Principle and Wildlife

The Polluter Pays Principle is primarily an environmental-liability principle and should not be mechanically applied to every wildlife decline. However, the broader idea that actors causing environmental harm should bear appropriate responsibility remains relevant to environmental governance.

99. Sustainable Development

Vulture conservation shows that livestock production, veterinary care and biodiversity conservation must be integrated rather than treated as isolated sectors.

100. SDG Linkages

Vulture conservation is particularly connected to SDG 15—Life on Land. Through ecosystem-health relationships it can also intersect with SDG 3 on health and broader sustainable-development objectives.

101. Wildlife Protection Framework

India's vulture conservation operates within the broader framework of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, wildlife institutions, species-recovery programmes and biodiversity conservation policies.

102. Central Zoo Authority and Ex-situ Conservation

The Central Zoo Authority has relevance for scientific management of captive wildlife and conservation-breeding programmes. For Prelims, distinguish it from institutions primarily responsible for field research or protected-area management.

103. Ministry Responsible

At the Union level, wildlife conservation falls under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

104. International Dimension

Vultures cross political boundaries, particularly migratory and wide-ranging species. Effective conservation therefore requires international and regional cooperation.

105. Convention on Migratory Species

The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, commonly called CMS or the Bonn Convention, provides an international framework for conservation of migratory wildlife.

106. Raptors MoU

India has participated in international cooperation concerning migratory birds of prey through the CMS framework. Regional coordination is important because vultures may range across South Asian countries.

107. SAVE

Saving Asia’s Vultures from Extinction, commonly known as SAVE, is a conservation consortium involving organisations working to recover South Asian vultures. UPSC may test such conservation initiatives through organisation-species matching.

108. Transboundary Conservation

A vulture protected from toxic drugs in one country may encounter threats after crossing an international boundary. Conservation standards therefore benefit from regional harmonisation.

109. Drug Regulation as Biodiversity Policy

One of the most important lessons from the vulture crisis is that pharmaceutical regulation can become biodiversity policy. Decisions made in the livestock-health sector may determine the survival of wild species.

110. Environmental Externality

The original veterinary use of harmful drugs generated an environmental externality because wildlife and society bore ecological costs not reflected in the immediate livestock-treatment decision.

111. Inter-sectoral Governance

Vulture conservation therefore requires inter-sectoral governance involving wildlife conservation, pharmaceuticals, veterinary science, agriculture, livestock management and local government.

112. Data-Based Conservation

Population counts, mortality investigations, toxicology, satellite tracking and genetic studies allow conservation resources to be directed toward the most important threats.

113. Citizen Science

Reliable citizen observations can supplement professional monitoring by providing information about sightings, nesting sites and mortality events, provided the data are scientifically validated.

114. Climate Change

Climate change can alter ecosystems, food availability and species distributions. However, it should not obscure the historically demonstrated importance of veterinary-drug toxicity in South Asia’s vulture collapse.

115. Human-Animal Conflict

Changes in scavenger communities may affect interactions among humans, livestock, feral animals and wildlife. Ecosystem conservation therefore contributes indirectly to managing human-animal relationships.

116. Conservation Economics

Species can generate economic value through ecosystem services even where they have no conventional market price. The services of scavengers illustrate why biodiversity should not be valued only through direct commercial use.

117. Natural Capital

Vultures can be understood as part of natural capital because healthy ecosystems and their biological components provide services that support human well-being.

118. Ecological Restoration

Rebuilding vulture populations is a form of ecological restoration aimed at restoring not just species numbers but the ecological scavenging function they perform.

119. Conservation Success Requires Patience

Because vultures reproduce slowly, short-term fluctuations should not be interpreted as complete recovery or failure. Long-term monitoring is essential.

120. Why 2026 is Important

The September 2026 event shows that Indian policy has moved from emergency response to a broader recovery framework involving breeding, reintroduction, safe landscapes, technical capacity and community participation.

121. Story of Jatayu

During the 2026 programme, a publication titled 'Story of Jatayu: Saving India’s Vulture' was released, documenting the journey of vulture conservation and the role of the Pinjore centre.

122. Crisis-to-Recovery Approach

The phrase 'crisis to recovery' is important conceptually. Preventing extinction is only the first stage; rebuilding ecologically functional wild populations is the ultimate goal.

123. Conservation Breeding and Reintroduction

A successful recovery cycle can be understood as: identify threats → reduce threats → establish genetically managed assurance populations → breed birds → identify safe landscapes → release birds → monitor survival → adapt management.

124. Prelims Fact 1

Diclofenac: veterinary NSAID associated with catastrophic vulture mortality.

125. Prelims Fact 2

Meloxicam: historically promoted as a safer veterinary alternative for vultures.

126. Prelims Fact 3

Jatayu Conservation Breeding Centre: Pinjore, Haryana.

127. Prelims Fact 4

White-rumped Vulture: Gyps bengalensis.

128. Prelims Fact 5

Indian Vulture: Gyps indicus.

129. Prelims Fact 6

Slender-billed Vulture: Gyps tenuirostris.

130. Prelims Fact 7

Egyptian Vulture: Neophron percnopterus.

131. Prelims Fact 8

Red-headed Vulture: Sarcogyps calvus.

132. Prelims Fact 9

Bearded Vulture: Gypaetus barbatus.

133. Prelims Fact 10

Vulture Safe Zones are landscape-level conservation initiatives; they should not be confused with conventional fenced zoological facilities.

134. Likely UPSC Trap: Scavenger versus Decomposer

Vultures are scavengers, not decomposers in the strict ecological sense. Decomposers such as bacteria and fungi chemically break down organic matter, whereas vultures consume carrion.

135. Likely UPSC Trap: Predator versus Scavenger

Vultures belong to birds of prey but are primarily scavengers. The phrase 'bird of prey' therefore does not necessarily mean that the animal obtains all food by actively killing prey.

136. Likely UPSC Trap: In-situ versus Ex-situ

Vulture Safe Zones represent primarily in-situ conservation, whereas conservation breeding centres represent ex-situ conservation.

137. Likely UPSC Trap: Drug Pathway

Vultures were primarily poisoned indirectly after consuming carcasses of livestock treated with toxic veterinary drugs.

138. Likely UPSC Trap: Recovery

Captive breeding alone does not equal species recovery. Self-sustaining wild populations are the long-term objective.

139. Likely UPSC Trap: One Health

One Health integrates human, animal and ecosystem health rather than treating them as isolated sectors.

140. Likely UPSC Trap: CMS

CMS stands for the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals and is also known as the Bonn Convention.

141. Important 2026 Number

JCBC Pinjore housed 356 vultures during 2025–26.

142. Important 2026 Number

The centre successfully bred 35 chicks during 2025–26.

143. Important 2026 Number

It released or contributed 87 vultures for reintroduction.

144. Important 2026 Number

It transferred 90 vultures to other conservation-breeding institutions.

145. Important 2026 Number

The centre trained 1,222 participants from 22 institutions during 2025–26.

146. Mains Angle: Biodiversity and Public Health

The vulture crisis demonstrates that wildlife conservation can be a public-health issue. Loss of ecological functions can create social costs that are not immediately visible when a species begins declining.

147. Mains Angle: Regulatory Coordination

The crisis illustrates the danger of regulatory silos. A medicine assessed only for livestock benefits may create unintended wildlife impacts unless environmental toxicology is integrated into regulation.

148. Mains Angle: Science-Policy Interface

Vulture recovery required scientific identification of the mortality factor followed by regulatory, veterinary and conservation responses. It is therefore an excellent example of science informing public policy.

149. Mains Angle: Ex-situ and In-situ Integration

Conservation breeding can prevent immediate extinction, but safe landscapes are necessary for successful reintroduction. The most effective conservation strategy integrates both approaches.

150. Mains Angle: Community Participation

Veterinary practices and carcass management occur across large rural landscapes. Community participation is therefore essential for converting conservation policy into safe conditions on the ground.

151. Mains Angle: Institutional Capacity

Training veterinarians, forest personnel, zoo professionals and conservation practitioners creates the technical capacity necessary for long-term species recovery.

152. Mains Angle: Ecological Governance

The vulture story demonstrates that environmental governance should focus on ecological relationships rather than isolated species. Livestock, medicines, carcasses, scavengers, pathogens and humans form an interconnected system.

153. Way Forward — Safe Veterinary Drugs

India must continue strengthening surveillance of veterinary pharmaceuticals and prevent the use or misuse of drugs known to be harmful to vultures.

154. Way Forward — Expand Vulture Safe Zones

Safe landscapes should combine veterinary awareness, drug monitoring, safe food availability, nesting-site protection and community participation.

155. Way Forward — Strengthen Monitoring

Regular population surveys, mortality investigations and post-release monitoring should guide adaptive conservation management.

156. Way Forward — Genetic Management

Conservation-breeding centres should continue maintaining genetically viable populations and exchanging individuals when scientifically appropriate.

157. Way Forward — Regional Cooperation

South Asian countries should coordinate veterinary-drug safety and conservation monitoring because vultures move across national boundaries.

158. Way Forward — One Health Integration

Veterinary, wildlife and public-health institutions should jointly assess ecological consequences of livestock-health interventions.

159. Way Forward — Community Stewardship

Conservation incentives and awareness should enable local communities to become custodians of safe vulture landscapes.

160. Conclusion

India’s vulture story is one of the clearest demonstrations of the interconnected nature of biodiversity, veterinary science and human welfare. A pharmaceutical intervention intended for livestock contributed to the collapse of an ecologically vital group of birds. Scientific research identified the threat, while regulation, conservation breeding, safe veterinary practices and landscape-level interventions created a pathway toward recovery. The 2026 emphasis on Vulture Safe Zones, reintroduction and technical capacity signals a transition from simply preventing extinction toward rebuilding healthy wild populations. For UPSC aspirants, the topic is exceptionally important because it integrates species identification, ecology, environmental governance, One Health, veterinary drugs, in-situ and ex-situ conservation and international cooperation.

Gyps himalayensis

Gyps fulvus

Aegypius monachus

107. SAVE

Saving Asia’s Vultures from Extinction

140. CMS
