Part I — English

1. Introduction

Mineral and energy resources form an essential foundation of industrial and economic development. Minerals supply raw materials for manufacturing, construction, transport and engineering, while energy resources support agriculture, households, industries and infrastructure.

West Bengal does not possess the same diversity of major metallic mineral deposits as some neighbouring states, such as Jharkhand and Odisha. However, it has considerable historical and economic importance because of its coal resources, particularly the Raniganj coalfield, and its extensive power-generation and transmission infrastructure.

The state's mineral economy is associated with coal, fireclay, china clay, building materials and other locally occurring minerals. Its energy system includes thermal power, hydropower, solar energy and other renewable-energy initiatives.

2. Classification of Mineral Resources

Minerals can be classified according to their composition and economic uses.

Metallic minerals contain metals that can be extracted for industrial purposes. Examples include iron ore, copper ore and manganese ore. West Bengal is not among India's principal large-scale iron-ore-producing states.

Non-metallic minerals are used in ceramics, construction, refractories and other industries. Examples relevant to West Bengal include china clay, fireclay and certain building materials.

Energy minerals are used as sources of energy. Coal is the most important historically significant energy mineral of West Bengal.

A mineral deposit becomes economically important when its quality, quantity, accessibility, market demand and extraction costs make mining feasible.

3. Coal Resources of West Bengal

Coal is the most significant mineral resource in the industrial history of West Bengal.

It is a combustible sedimentary rock formed mainly from accumulated plant material subjected to geological processes over millions of years.

Coal is classified into types such as lignite, sub-bituminous coal, bituminous coal and anthracite, based on rank and characteristics.

The coal resources of West Bengal are especially associated with the Damodar Valley region.

3.1 Raniganj Coalfield

The Raniganj coalfield is one of India's oldest and historically most important coal-mining regions.

It is mainly associated with the western part of West Bengal, particularly the Asansol–Raniganj industrial belt in Paschim Bardhaman district, and extends into adjoining areas.

Commercial coal mining in India is conventionally traced to mining operations begun in the Raniganj region in 1774.

The coalfield supported the development of railway transport, iron and steel industries, engineering workshops, thermal power generation and other manufacturing activities.

3.2 Importance of Raniganj Coal

The importance of Raniganj coal can be understood through its role in:

  • Supplying fuel for thermal power generation.

  • Supporting the historical development of eastern India's industrial economy.

  • Encouraging railway and transport infrastructure.

  • Providing employment in mining and related activities.

  • Stimulating urbanisation around Asansol, Raniganj and adjoining industrial settlements.

Coal quality varies by seam and location, so not all coal from a coalfield is suitable for the same industrial use.

4. Coal Mining Organisations

Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) is a subsidiary of Coal India Limited and operates coal mines in the Raniganj coalfield and other coal-bearing areas.

Coal India Limited is a major public-sector coal-producing enterprise in India.

Coal mining involves exploration, extraction, transportation, processing where required, and environmental management.

Two broad mining methods are used:

Opencast mining: Coal is extracted after removing the overlying soil and rock. It can be economical for deposits relatively close to the surface but may significantly disturb land.

Underground mining: Coal is extracted through shafts, tunnels and underground workings. This method may be necessary for deeper seams and requires substantial safety measures.

5. Environmental Problems of Coal Mining

Coal mining creates several environmental and social challenges.

Land subsidence: Underground extraction can weaken support beneath the surface and cause the ground to sink.

Mine fires: Fires in coal-bearing areas can damage resources, release pollutants and threaten settlements.

Air pollution: Mining, transport and coal combustion generate dust and emissions.

Water pollution: Mine drainage and industrial activity can affect surface water and groundwater quality.

Land degradation: Opencast mining can remove vegetation, disturb soil and alter drainage patterns.

Mine rehabilitation: Abandoned and exhausted mines require appropriate closure, stabilisation and restoration.

Environmental management includes mine planning, dust suppression, water treatment, land reclamation, monitoring and community safety measures.

6. Other Mineral Resources

Although coal dominates the state's mineral history, West Bengal also contains non-metallic minerals and mineral-based raw materials.

Fireclay

Fireclay is a type of clay used to manufacture refractory products that can withstand high temperatures.

Refractory materials are important in furnaces, kilns and metallurgical industries.

Fireclay deposits are associated with some coal-bearing geological formations.

China Clay

China clay, also called kaolin, is used in ceramics, porcelain, paper, paints and other industrial products.

Its economic usefulness depends on properties such as purity, particle size and suitability for particular manufacturing processes.

Building Materials

Stone, sand, clay and other construction materials support infrastructure and building activity. Their extraction must be regulated to limit damage to rivers, landscapes and ecosystems.

7. Energy Resources of West Bengal

Energy resources can be divided into conventional and non-conventional or renewable categories.

Conventional energy sources include coal, petroleum and natural gas. Hydropower is also a long-established electricity source, although it is renewable.

Renewable energy sources include solar, wind, biomass and small hydropower.

West Bengal's electricity supply depends on a combination of generation within the state, interconnected electricity networks and purchases or allocations from other generating facilities.

8. Thermal Power Generation

Thermal power stations generate electricity by converting heat energy into mechanical energy and then electrical energy.

In a conventional coal-fired thermal power station, coal combustion produces heat, which generates steam. Steam drives a turbine connected to an electrical generator.

Major thermal power facilities associated with West Bengal include:

Kolaghat Thermal Power Station: Located in Purba Medinipur district and associated with the West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL).

Bakreswar Thermal Power Station: Located in Birbhum district.

Sagardighi Thermal Power Station: Located in Murshidabad district.

Bandel Thermal Power Station: Located in Hooghly district.

Santaldih Thermal Power Station: Located in Purulia district.

These stations are important for understanding the geographical distribution of electricity infrastructure in West Bengal.

9. Damodar Valley Corporation

The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) was established in 1948 under the Damodar Valley Corporation Act, 1948.

It is a multipurpose river-valley organisation associated with the Damodar River basin.

Its principal objectives have included flood moderation, irrigation, electricity generation and regional development.

The DVC system includes dams, reservoirs, power-generation facilities and transmission infrastructure.

Important dams associated with the Damodar Valley system include Tilaiya, Konar, Maithon and Panchet. Not all of these dams are located in West Bengal; several are situated in present-day Jharkhand.

This distinction is important for competitive examinations.

10. Hydroelectric Power

Hydroelectric power is generated by using the energy of flowing or falling water to drive turbines connected to generators.

Unlike coal-fired power generation, hydropower does not require fuel combustion during electricity generation.

However, large hydroelectric projects can affect river ecosystems, sediment transport, land use and local communities.

Purulia Pumped Storage Project

The Purulia Pumped Storage Project is an important electricity-storage and generation facility in Purulia district.

A pumped-storage plant uses electricity to pump water to an upper reservoir during suitable periods. When electricity demand is high, the stored water is released through turbines to generate power.

Pumped storage helps balance electricity supply and demand, especially when renewable energy generation varies during the day.

11. Solar Energy

Solar photovoltaic systems convert sunlight directly into electricity using semiconductor materials.

Solar energy is increasingly important for diversifying electricity generation and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Potential applications in West Bengal include rooftop solar systems, institutional installations, industrial rooftops, solar pumps and utility-scale solar projects where suitable land and grid infrastructure are available.

The amount of electricity generated depends on sunlight, weather, panel orientation, temperature, equipment efficiency and maintenance.

12. Biomass and Other Renewable Energy

Biomass energy uses organic materials such as agricultural residues, animal waste and other suitable biodegradable materials.

Biogas can be produced through anaerobic digestion, in which microorganisms break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen.

Biomass and biogas can support rural energy needs, waste management and decentralised energy systems.

However, sustainable biomass use requires attention to feedstock availability, competing agricultural uses and air-pollution controls.

13. Relationship Between Minerals, Energy and Industries

The location of industrial regions is often influenced by access to energy and raw materials.

The Asansol–Durgapur industrial belt developed partly because of proximity to coal resources, transport facilities and industrial infrastructure.

Thermal power stations support electricity demand from industries, households, agriculture and services.

Reliable energy infrastructure is also essential for modern sectors such as information technology, telecommunications, healthcare and logistics.

14. Sustainable Resource Management

Sustainable resource management aims to use minerals and energy resources efficiently while protecting ecosystems and public health.

Important measures include:

  1. Improving energy efficiency in industry and buildings.

  2. Reducing pollution from mining and electricity generation.

  3. Restoring mined land and protecting water resources.

  4. Expanding renewable electricity generation.

  5. Strengthening electricity transmission and storage.

  6. Encouraging recycling and responsible material use.

  7. Ensuring environmental monitoring and community participation.

15. Important Examination Facts

  1. Raniganj is historically associated with the beginning of commercial coal mining in India in 1774.

  2. The Raniganj coalfield is associated with the Damodar Valley region.

  3. Eastern Coalfields Limited is a subsidiary of Coal India Limited.

  15. Pumped-storage hydropower stores energy by moving water between reservoirs at different elevations.

16. Additional Minerals: Apatite, Dolomite and Silica Sand

The Indian Bureau of Mines identifies West Bengal as an important holder of apatite resources. Apatite occurs notably in Purulia and is significant as a phosphate-bearing mineral.

Other documented mineral occurrences include:

  • Dolomite: Reported in parts of northern West Bengal, including Jalpaiguri.

  • Feldspar: Occurs in Bankura and Purulia.

  • Granite: Occurs in Bankura, Birbhum and Purulia.

  • Limestone: Reported in Bankura and Purulia.

  • Quartz and silica sand: Occur in districts including Bankura, Hooghly and Purulia.
