Indian Monsoon: Mechanism, Variability and Climate Change |
UPSC CSE 2027 | Day 23 | GS Paper 1 | Physical Geography
1. Introduction and significance
English: The Indian monsoon is a seasonal reversal of winds associated with differential heating of land and ocean, atmospheric circulation and ocean–atmosphere coupling. The southwest monsoon normally provides most of India’s annual rainfall, but its distribution varies sharply across space and time. It influences agriculture, reservoirs, hydropower, inflation, ecosystems and disaster risk.
2. Seasonal cycle and onset
English: The southwest monsoon generally reaches Kerala around 1 June, advances across the subcontinent and normally covers the country by early July. These are climatological reference dates, not guaranteed dates for any given year. Withdrawal usually begins in northwest India in September. The northeast monsoon during October–December is particularly important for Tamil Nadu and adjoining southeastern India.
3. Thermal contrast and ITCZ
English: In boreal summer, strong heating over South Asia shifts the low-pressure monsoon trough northward. The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is a belt of converging trade winds and rising air; its seasonal migration supports monsoon convection. Thermal contrast alone is insufficient to explain monsoon variability because circulation, moisture transport and ocean temperatures also matter.
4. Cross-equatorial flow and Somali jet
English: Southeast trade winds cross the equator over the Indian Ocean and turn southwesterly under the Coriolis effect in the Northern Hemisphere. The low-level Somali jet strengthens moisture transport from the Arabian Sea. The Coriolis force is zero exactly at the equator and changes sign across it; the wind deflection becomes pronounced away from the equator.
5. Upper-air circulation and Tibetan Plateau
English: Summer heating over the Tibetan Plateau and the surrounding elevated terrain contributes to upper-tropospheric circulation and the South Asian High. The subtropical westerly jet shifts north of the Himalayas during the summer monsoon, while the tropical easterly jet can develop aloft. Their positions are associated with, but do not independently determine, monsoon behaviour.
6. Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal branches
English: The Arabian Sea branch brings heavy orographic rain to the windward Western Ghats, while the Deccan interior often lies in a rain shadow. The Bay of Bengal branch curves toward northeast India and the Ganga plains. Moisture-laden winds interacting with the Khasi hills help explain very high rainfall near Mawsynram and Cherrapunji.
7. Monsoon trough, lows and depressions
English: The monsoon trough extends broadly across northern India, and its position affects rainfall belts. Low-pressure systems and depressions frequently form over the Bay of Bengal and move inland, supplying widespread rain. A shift of the trough toward the Himalayan foothills can increase rainfall there while reducing it over parts of central India.
8. Active and break spells
English: An active spell features enhanced rainfall over substantial parts of the monsoon core zone; a break spell involves suppressed rainfall there, often with changed convection over the Himalayan foothills and northeast. Neither term means that rain stops everywhere in India. Intraseasonal oscillations, including the Madden–Julian Oscillation, modulate these spells.
9. ENSO and Walker circulation
English: El Niño is sustained warming of the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, while La Niña involves cooling there. ENSO changes tropical convection and Walker circulation and can affect Indian rainfall through atmospheric teleconnections. El Niño is often associated with weaker Indian summer monsoon rainfall, but this relationship is probabilistic, not deterministic; other drivers can offset it.
10. Indian Ocean Dipole
English: The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) measures the sea-surface temperature contrast between western and southeastern equatorial Indian Ocean regions. In a positive IOD phase, the western region is relatively warmer than the eastern region; a negative phase shows the reverse. Positive IOD conditions can sometimes support Indian monsoon rainfall, including during some El Niño years, but outcomes vary.
11. Other ocean–atmosphere influences
English: The Madden–Julian Oscillation is an eastward-propagating tropical disturbance in convection and circulation on intraseasonal timescales. Indian Ocean warming, Eurasian snow cover, land-surface moisture and atmospheric aerosols may also influence monsoon dynamics. Their effects are complex, interactive and dependent on season and location.
12. Rainfall distribution and regional contrasts
English: Western Rajasthan receives little monsoon rain partly because of moisture and circulation patterns, while the windward Western Ghats and parts of northeast India receive intense rain. The Himalayas obstruct and lift moist air, shaping the northern rainfall regime. Coastal Tamil Nadu receives a substantial share of its rain from the northeast monsoon, unlike much of India.
13. Climate change and monsoon extremes
English: A warmer atmosphere can hold more water vapour, increasing the potential for intense rainfall when suitable lifting occurs. Observed and projected changes differ by region and metric: seasonal totals, rainy-day frequency, dry spells and extreme-event intensity need separate analysis. Urban flooding is aggravated by impermeable surfaces, drainage failure and wetland loss; a single flood cannot be attributed solely to climate change without event-attribution analysis.
14. Agriculture, economy and food security
English: Rain-fed farming is particularly sensitive to the onset, distribution and breaks of rainfall. Delayed sowing, crop stress, reservoir shortages and flood damage can affect yields, rural income and food prices. Policy responses include drought-resilient seeds, diversified cropping, micro-irrigation, crop insurance, weather advisories and improved storage and market connectivity.
15. Forecasting and governance
English: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues seasonal and extended-range forecasts and weather warnings. Forecast skill differs across spatial and temporal scales: an all-India seasonal outlook cannot reliably predict rainfall on an individual farm or day. Useful governance combines forecasts with district-level contingency plans, reservoir operating rules, early-warning dissemination, watershed restoration and resilient infrastructure.
16. UPSC analytical perspective
English: The monsoon should be studied as a coupled physical and socioeconomic system. A normal national rainfall total can coexist with local drought and destructive floods. For GS1, connect circulation, relief and regional patterns; for GS3, evaluate climate adaptation, agriculture and disaster management; for essays and ethics, discuss distributive impacts on vulnerable communities.
Key distinctions for Prelims |
