BIOS is an important hardware-related concept commonly asked in competitive examinations. BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. It is closely associated with firmware and initial computer startup functions. What is Firmware? / Firmware क्या है?
Firmware is software embedded in hardware-oriented non-volatile memory. Unlike ordinary application programs that users frequently install and remove, firmware generally provides low-level operational instructions for devices. The source material classifies BIOS under firmware rather than ordinary application software.

Role of BIOS / BIOS का कार्य
At startup, BIOS-related firmware helps perform initial checks and prepares hardware components for the operating system boot process. It provides a fundamental layer between hardware startup and the later loading of system software.

POST / Power-On Self-Test
During startup, computers can perform diagnostic checks known as Power-On Self-Test or POST. The purpose is to verify that important hardware components are functioning sufficiently for the system to proceed with startup. Errors detected at this stage may prevent normal booting.
Startup के दौरान computer Power-On Self-Test अर्थात POST कर सकता है। इसका उद्देश्य important hardware components की प्रारंभिक जाँच करना है ताकि system आगे boot कर सके। यदि serious hardware problem detect होती है, तो normal startup प्रभावित हो सकता है।
Boot Process / बूट प्रक्रिया
Booting refers to the process through which a computer starts and loads the operating environment. Firmware performs early hardware-related functions, after which control is gradually transferred to system software and the operating system.

BIOS and ROM / BIOS और ROM
