Why in News?
Nearly 600 students from Eklavya Model Residential Schools across 12 states were reported to have cleared leading entrance examinations for undergraduate medical and engineering courses, highlighting the academic performance of the EMRS network.
What are EMRS?
Eklavya Model Residential Schools are a flagship educational intervention of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to provide quality residential education to Scheduled Tribe students, particularly those living in remote and tribal-dominated areas.
Classes
EMRS are co-educational residential schools providing education generally from Class VI to Class XII.
History
The EMRS programme has been operational since 1997-98. A major restructuring was approved in 2018-19 to expand the geographical coverage and standardise infrastructure and educational quality.
Criteria for Establishing EMRS
The revised framework envisaged an EMRS in blocks having more than 50% Scheduled Tribe population and at least 20,000 tribal persons, subject to applicable government norms.
Target
The Government set a target of establishing 728 EMRS across the country by 2026.
National Education Society for Tribal Students
The National Education Society for Tribal Students, or NESTS, is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs responsible for coordinating, establishing and managing the EMRS system.

Provision is also made for deserving Scheduled Tribe students with demonstrated excellence in sports.

The scheme aims to reduce geographical and social barriers to high-quality education, improve educational attainment among tribal students and provide opportunities comparable with other high-quality residential-school systems.
