The rare ginkgo-toothed beaked whale attracted global attention after scientists reported the first confirmed at-sea identification of living individuals off Baja California, Mexico. The scientific work combined visual observations, acoustic recordings and genetic evidence.
मेक्सिको के बाजा कैलिफोर्निया तट के निकट वैज्ञानिकों द्वारा जीवित गिंको-दाँत वाली बीक्ड व्हेल की समुद्र में पहली पुष्ट पहचान की जानकारी सामने आने के बाद यह दुर्लभ प्रजाति वैश्विक चर्चा में आई। वैज्ञानिक अध्ययन में प्रत्यक्ष अवलोकन, ध्वनिक अभिलेख और आनुवंशिक प्रमाणों का उपयोग किया गया।
Scientific Name | वैज्ञानिक नाम
The scientific name is Mesoplodon ginkgodens. It belongs to the beaked-whale family Ziphiidae. Beaked whales are among the least easily observed large marine mammals because they spend much of their time in deep offshore waters.
इसका वैज्ञानिक नाम Mesoplodon ginkgodens है। यह जिफिइडे नामक बीक्ड व्हेल परिवार से संबंधित है। बीक्ड व्हेल बड़े समुद्री स्तनधारियों में सबसे कठिनाई से देखे जाने वाले जीवों में हैं क्योंकि वे अपना अधिकांश समय गहरे अपतटीय जल में बिताती हैं।
Distinctive Teeth | विशिष्ट दाँत
Adult males possess a pair of characteristic teeth in the lower jaw whose shape resembles a ginkgo leaf, giving the species its common name.
वयस्क नर के निचले जबड़े में विशिष्ट आकार के दाँतों की एक जोड़ी होती है, जिनका आकार गिंको वृक्ष की पत्ती जैसा दिखाई देता है। इसी कारण इस प्रजाति का सामान्य नाम पड़ा है।
Distribution | वितरण
The species is associated with tropical and temperate waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Records have historically depended heavily on stranded animals because live observations are extremely difficult.
यह प्रजाति हिंद और प्रशांत महासागरों के उष्णकटिबंधीय तथा समशीतोष्ण जल में पाई जाती है। जीवित अवस्था में इसे देखना अत्यंत कठिन होने के कारण ऐतिहासिक जानकारी मुख्यतः तट पर बहकर आए मृत अथवा फँसे हुए जीवों पर आधारित रही है।
Deep-Diving Adaptation | गहरे समुद्र में गोताखोरी
Beaked whales as a group are exceptionally specialised for deep diving. They spend long periods below the surface searching for prey such as squid and deep-water fish and surface only briefly to breathe.
बीक्ड व्हेल का समूह गहरे समुद्र में गोताखोरी के लिए अत्यधिक अनुकूलित है। वे स्क्विड और गहरे जल की मछलियों जैसे शिकार की खोज में लंबे समय तक सतह के नीचे रहती हैं और साँस लेने के लिए थोड़े समय के लिए सतह पर आती हैं।
First Confirmed At-Sea Identification | समुद्र में पहली पुष्ट पहचान
The field observations were made during a 2024 expedition off northwestern Baja California. Genetic material and acoustic evidence helped establish that the observed whales were Mesoplodon ginkgodens. The research paper was first published online on 28 July 2025 and received broad international media attention in November 2025.

Conservation Status | संरक्षण स्थिति
The IUCN Red List assessment has classified the species as Data Deficient, reflecting the scarcity of information rather than proving that the species is either secure or highly threatened. It is listed in CITES Appendix II.
