Why in News?

Astronomers from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and collaborating institutions used high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy to study tiny, short-lived plasma loops in the lower layers of the Sun's atmosphere.

What are Plasma Loops?

The Sun's atmosphere contains hot ionised gas called plasma. Magnetic fields can confine this plasma into curved, arc-like structures known as loops.

Miniature Plasma Loops

The newly studied miniature loops are roughly 3,000 to 4,000 km long but less than 100 km wide. Despite their considerable absolute size, they are extremely small compared with the large coronal loops commonly studied by solar physicists.

Short Lifespan

These structures are short-lived and may survive for only a few minutes. Their small size and brief existence have made them difficult to resolve with earlier instruments.

Where are They Found?

Unlike the most prominent large loops seen high in the solar corona, the miniature loops investigated by researchers are found in lower layers of the solar atmosphere.

Why are They Important?

Scientists believe these loops can provide clues about how magnetic energy is stored, reorganised and suddenly released on small scales in the solar atmosphere.

Coronal Loops

Coronal loops are large arch-shaped structures of very hot plasma aligned along magnetic-field lines. Plasma in such structures can reach temperatures above one million degrees.

Solar Magnetic Energy

The Sun's magnetic field drives many dynamic phenomena, including solar flares, coronal heating and eruptions. Studying smaller loops may help scientists understand the fundamental processes responsible for releasing magnetic energy.

Research Techniques

The team used high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy. Spectroscopy allows scientists to analyse light at different wavelengths and infer properties such as temperature, motion and physical conditions within solar plasma.

IIA is an autonomous research institution under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Its headquarters are in Bengaluru.
