Panna Tiger Reserve |
Why in News?
Vatsala, an exceptionally old female elephant associated with Panna Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, died after living for more than a century according to local accounts. The development brought renewed attention to Panna Tiger Reserve.
Location
Panna Tiger Reserve is situated in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh in the Vindhyan mountain landscape. It lies within the Bundelkhand region.
Area
Panna National Park covers about 543 sq km, while the notified tiger-reserve landscape includes a substantially larger core and buffer area.
Project Tiger
Panna was declared a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger in 1994. It is the principal tiger reserve of the Bundelkhand landscape.
Landscape
The reserve has characteristic table-top topography consisting of plateaus, gorges, cliffs and valleys. Parallel plateaus extend across parts of the reserve and create a distinctive Vindhyan landscape.
Ken River
The Ken River is one of the most important geographical features of the reserve. It flows generally from south to north through the protected landscape and supports aquatic and riparian ecosystems.
Ancient Rock Paintings
Panna is also known for ancient rock paintings and archaeological remains. Therefore, the statement that Panna Tiger Reserve has no ancient rock paintings is incorrect.
Biogeography
The landscape belongs to the Deccan Peninsula biogeographic zone and the Central Highlands biotic province.
Vegetation
Dry deciduous forest is the dominant vegetation type, interspersed with grasslands. Teak forests occur towards parts of the north and mixed teak-kardhai vegetation occurs in adjoining areas. The Panna landscape lies close to the northern natural limit of teak distribution in India.
Flora
Khair, scientifically known as Acacia catechu, occurs prominently on dry and steep slopes. Other dry-deciduous species are also characteristic of the reserve.
Fauna
Major mammals include tiger, leopard, sloth bear and striped hyena. Other carnivores include jackal, Indian wolf, dhole, jungle cat and rusty-spotted cat.
Tribal Communities
The surrounding landscape is inhabited by several indigenous communities, including Gond and Baiga groups, whose livelihoods and cultural traditions are connected with the forests of central India.
Tiger Recovery
Panna is particularly important in Indian conservation history because its tiger population collapsed in the late 2000s. A tiger reintroduction programme was subsequently undertaken, and the reserve became a major example of tiger population recovery through translocation and scientific monitoring.
