Why in News?
A group of 101 Indian students, including 50 women, received Erasmus+ scholarships for master's programmes in Europe, bringing the European Union's flagship education and mobility programme into focus.
What is Erasmus+?
Erasmus+ is the European Union programme supporting education, training, youth and sport. It promotes academic and professional mobility and cooperation among institutions in Europe and partner countries around the world.
Historical Origin
The original Erasmus programme was established by the European Communities in 1987 to promote cooperation and student exchange among European universities. Over subsequent decades, its scope expanded considerably.
Present Programme
The current Erasmus+ programme covers the 2021-2027 period. It integrates mobility, education, training, youth and sports activities under a broad EU framework.
Study Opportunities
Students may study abroad, undertake internships and participate in Erasmus Mundus Joint Master programmes. Some joint programmes involve study at two or more universities and may lead to joint, double or multiple degrees.
Financial Support
Depending on the scheme, Erasmus+ funding can contribute towards tuition, travel and living costs. Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters offer competitive scholarships to eligible students from around the world.

Programme Management
Erasmus+ is managed principally by the European Commission together with the European Education and Culture Executive Agency and national agencies in participating countries.
Current Budget
The 2021-2027 programme has an EU budget exceeding €26 billion, substantially larger than that of the preceding programme period.
