Vera C. Rubin Observatory | वेरा सी. रुबिन वेधशाला
Why in News?
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile released its first major astronomical images in 2025, demonstrating the capabilities of its extraordinarily powerful 3,200-megapixel digital camera.
Location
The observatory is located on Cerro Pachón in the Chilean Andes, at an altitude of about 2,647 metres or 8,684 feet.
Why Cerro Pachón?
The location offers dark skies, dry atmospheric conditions and excellent visibility, making it highly suitable for astronomical observations.
Who was Vera Rubin?
The observatory is named after American astronomer Vera C. Rubin, whose observations of galaxy rotation curves provided major evidence for the existence of dark matter during the twentieth century.
Partnership
The observatory is jointly supported by the United States National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science.
Simonyi Survey Telescope
The centrepiece of the observatory is the Simonyi Survey Telescope. Its design combines a very wide field of view, rapid movement and an extremely large digital camera.
World's Largest Digital Camera
The LSST Camera has a resolution of approximately 3,200 megapixels or 3.2 gigapixels and weighs around 2,800 kg. It is among the most technologically advanced astronomical cameras ever constructed.
Legacy Survey of Space and Time
The observatory is designed to conduct the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, or LSST. It will repeatedly image much of the southern sky over about ten years.
Data Generation
The survey is expected to produce enormous amounts of astronomical data each night and generate millions of automated alerts when objects change brightness, move or newly appear.
Major Scientific Objectives
- Study dark matter and dark energy.
- Map the structure of the Milky Way.
- Study transient events such as supernovae.
- Detect and track asteroids and other Solar System objects.
- Observe billions of stars and galaxies over time.
Dark Matter and Dark Energy
Ordinary matter accounts for only a small fraction of the total energy content of the Universe. Current cosmological models estimate that dark energy accounts for roughly 68% and dark matter about 27%, while ordinary matter contributes around 5%.
