What is a Noun? / Noun क्या है?

A noun is a word used as the name of a person, place, thing, quality, state or idea.

Noun वह शब्द है जिसका प्रयोग किसी व्यक्ति, स्थान, वस्तु, गुण, अवस्था या विचार के नाम के रूप में किया जाता है।

Examples:

Rahul, Kolkata, book, honesty, childhood, freedom


1. Proper Noun / व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा

A Proper Noun is the specific name of a particular person, place or institution.

Proper Noun किसी विशेष व्यक्ति, स्थान या संस्था का नाम होता है।

Examples:

India, Kolkata, Ganga, Rahul, Monday

Proper nouns normally begin with a capital letter.

Proper Noun सामान्यतः Capital Letter से शुरू होता है।


2. Common Noun / जातिवाचक संज्ञा

A common noun refers to a class or category.

Common Noun किसी वर्ग या श्रेणी का सामान्य नाम बताता है।

Examples:

boy, city, river, teacher, book


3. Collective Noun / समूहवाचक संज्ञा

A collective noun refers to a group considered as a unit.

Collective Noun किसी समूह को एक इकाई के रूप में दर्शाता है।

Examples:

team, committee, army, jury, crowd


4. Material Noun / पदार्थवाचक संज्ञा

A material noun denotes a substance or material.

Material Noun किसी पदार्थ या सामग्री को दर्शाता है।

Examples:

gold, silver, iron, water, cotton


5. Abstract Noun / भाववाचक संज्ञा

An abstract noun represents a quality, state, action, emotion or idea that cannot normally be physically touched.

Abstract Noun किसी गुण, अवस्था, क्रिया, भावना या विचार को दर्शाता है जिसे सामान्यतः छुआ नहीं जा सकता।

Examples:

honesty, beauty, childhood, wisdom, courage


Countable Nouns / गणनीय संज्ञाएँ

These can be counted.

इन्हें गिना जा सकता है।

one book → two books

one student → five students


Uncountable Nouns / अगणनीय संज्ञाएँ

These are generally not counted individually in ordinary usage.

इनकी सामान्यतः अलग-अलग इकाइयों में गणना नहीं की जाती।

Important exam words:

information

furniture

luggage

equipment

knowledge

bread

scenery

Incorrect:

an advice

Correct:

a piece of advice

Incorrect:

many informations

Correct:

much information


Important Irregular Plurals

महत्वपूर्ण अनियमित बहुवचन

man → men

woman → women

child → children

tooth → teeth

foot → feet

mouse → mice

goose → geese

ox → oxen


Same Singular and Plural Forms

Singular और Plural समान

sheep → sheep

deer → deer

species → species

series → series


Nouns Commonly Used in Plural Form

सामान्यतः बहुवचन रूप में प्रयुक्त Nouns

scissors

trousers

spectacles

clothes

For one item:

a pair of scissors

a pair of trousers


Possessive Noun / संबंधसूचक Noun

For singular nouns:

the boy's book

For regular plural nouns ending in s:

the boys' hostel

For irregular plurals not ending in s:

children's books


Compound Possession / संयुक्त स्वामित्व

If two people jointly possess one thing:

Ravi and Mohan's house

यदि एक ही वस्तु दोनों की संयुक्त है।

If each has a separate possession:

Ravi's and Mohan's houses

यदि दोनों की अलग-अलग वस्तुएँ हैं।
