Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC) |
Why in News?
Scientists from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics collaborated with NASA researchers to study important parameters associated with a Coronal Mass Ejection using observations from the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph onboard India's Aditya-L1 solar mission.
What is VELC?
The Visible Emission Line Coronagraph, commonly called VELC, is the primary payload of Aditya-L1, India's first dedicated space-based mission for studying the Sun.
Developer
VELC was developed by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics at its Centre for Research and Education in Science and Technology campus at Hosakote near Bengaluru, in collaboration with ISRO.
What is a Coronagraph?
A coronagraph is an astronomical instrument designed to block the intense light coming directly from the Sun's visible disc so that the much fainter solar corona can be observed more effectively.
Major Features
- VELC is an internally occulted solar coronagraph.
- It can perform imaging, spectroscopy and spectro-polarimetry.
- Its major components include a coronagraph, spectrograph, polarimetry module, detectors and supporting optical systems.
- It is designed for continuous observation of the solar corona from the Sun-Earth L1 region.
What Does VELC Study?
VELC studies the solar corona, the extremely hot and tenuous outer atmosphere of the Sun. It can help determine coronal temperature, density and plasma velocity and investigate the dynamics of Coronal Mass Ejections and the solar wind.
Coronal Mass Ejection
A Coronal Mass Ejection is a massive eruption of magnetised plasma from the Sun's corona into interplanetary space. Earth-directed CMEs can produce geomagnetic storms and affect satellites, communication systems, navigation and electrical infrastructure.
How Close Can VELC Observe?
VELC has been designed to observe the corona very close to the solar limb, extending down to approximately 1.05 solar radii.
About Aditya-L1
Aditya-L1 is India's first dedicated solar observatory mission. It operates around the first Sun-Earth Lagrange point, L1, approximately 1.5 million kilometres from Earth in the direction of the Sun.
Why L1?
A spacecraft near the L1 region can maintain a nearly continuous view of the Sun without the regular occultations experienced by many Earth-orbiting observatories. This makes the region particularly useful for continuous solar observations and space-weather studies.
Important Dates
- 2 September 2023: ISRO launched Aditya-L1 aboard PSLV-C57 from Sriharikota.
- 6 January 2024: Aditya-L1 was inserted into its planned halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L1 point.
- 2024 onward: Scientific payload observations progressively strengthened India's space-based solar research programme.
- 2025: IIA-NASA collaboration using VELC observations demonstrated its importance for studying CMEs and solar-coronal dynamics.

Centre for Research and Education in Science and Technology
