A. Judicial and quasi-judicial authoritiesA.

Explanation

The writ of Prohibition is directed against subordinate judicial and quasi-judicial authorities to prevent them from continuing proceedings beyond their lawful jurisdiction.
Its purpose is preventive: a superior court intervenes before the impugned proceeding is completed and directs the subordinate body not to proceed in the unlawful manner.
This is why Prohibition is often contrasted with Certiorari.
Prohibition generally operates while proceedings are still pending, whereas Certiorari is commonly associated with quashing a decision or proceeding after the jurisdictional error has occurred.
Prohibition is not a general mechanism for controlling legislative activity or purely administrative action.
Its traditional field is judicial or quasi-judicial proceedings where the subordinate authority lacks jurisdiction, exceeds its jurisdiction or acts contrary to fundamental requirements of law.
For competitive examinations, the two essential points are: Prohibition is preventive, and it is directed principally against subordinate courts and quasi-judicial bodies.
