Explanation

The writ of Prohibition is issued to prevent a subordinate judicial or quasi-judicial authority from continuing proceedings when it is acting outside its lawful jurisdiction.
The timing of the writ is the key examination point: Prohibition ordinarily operates before the proceeding has reached its final conclusion.
A superior court effectively tells the subordinate body to stop.
This preventive character differentiates it from Certiorari, which is generally used to quash a decision or proceeding after the relevant jurisdictional error has occurred.
Prohibition may become relevant where an inferior court lacks jurisdiction, exceeds the jurisdiction legally granted to it or proceeds contrary to essential legal limitations.
It is not designed merely to correct every minor error.
Its constitutional significance lies in maintaining the lawful distribution and exercise of judicial power.
A simple revision formula is: Prohibition—during proceedings—to stop; Certiorari—after a decision or completed proceeding—to quash.
