English: Understand electricity through a circuit
Electricity questions in Railway and SSC examinations often combine a definition with a small calculation. Start with a closed circuit: a source provides a potential difference, conducting wires provide a path, and a device uses electrical energy. A switch opens or closes that path. A bulb connected to a cell does not glow when the switch leaves the circuit open. This simple observation is more useful than memorising formulas without understanding what each quantity measures.
Current, potential difference and resistance
Electric current is the rate at which electric charge passes a point: I = Q/t. Its SI unit is the ampere; one ampere means one coulomb of charge per second. Potential difference is the work done per unit charge, V = W/Q, measured in volts. It is the electrical energy supplied or transferred per unit charge between two points. Resistance describes opposition to current and is measured in ohms. For a metallic conductor at constant temperature, Ohm's law gives V = IR. Thus, if 12 volts are applied across a 6-ohm resistor, the current is 2 amperes. In conventional circuit diagrams, current direction is taken from the positive terminal toward the negative terminal outside the source; electrons in a metal move in the opposite direction.
Ohm's law has a condition: the conductor's physical state, especially temperature, must remain unchanged. Do not apply V = IR as a universal claim that every electrical component has a fixed resistance. A filament bulb heats as current increases, changing its resistance. An ammeter is connected in series to measure current through a branch; a voltmeter is connected in parallel across the component whose potential difference is measured.
Series and parallel connections
In a series connection, the same current passes through each resistor. For 2-ohm and 4-ohm resistors in series, the equivalent resistance is 2 + 4 = 6 ohms. With a 12-volt supply, the current is 12/6 = 2 amperes. The potential differences across the two resistors are 4 volts and 8 volts respectively; their sum equals the supply voltage. In a parallel connection, both branches have the same potential difference. The equivalent resistance of two resistors satisfies 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2. For 2 and 4 ohms in parallel, R = 4/3 ohms. On 12 volts, the branch currents are 6 amperes and 3 amperes, giving a total of 9 amperes. A parallel network offers more paths, so its equivalent resistance is smaller than either positive branch resistance.
Electric power, energy and the electricity bill
Power is the rate of electrical energy transfer: P = VI. Combining this with Ohm's law gives P = I²R and P = V²/R for a resistor under the relevant conditions. The SI unit of power is the watt. Energy is power multiplied by time, E = Pt. A 100-watt lamp used for 10 hours consumes 1,000 watt-hours, or 1 kilowatt-hour. One kilowatt-hour equals 3.6 million joules. A billable 'unit' of electrical energy is commonly one kilowatt-hour, not one kilowatt; the latter measures power rather than energy. For three hours of operation, a 2-kilowatt appliance uses 6 kilowatt-hours, irrespective of the tariff. The cost would then be calculated from the applicable tariff and charges, which are not fixed by the physics formula.
Heating effect and safety
Joule's heating law gives the heat produced in a resistor as H = I²Rt when current, resistance and time are expressed in compatible SI units. Doubling the current while keeping R and t unchanged produces four times as much heat. This effect is useful in an electric heater, but excess current can overheat wiring. A fuse is placed in series so that its element melts when excessive current passes; it is not a device for increasing voltage. In household work, proper insulation, earthing and protective devices matter. Do not touch or experiment with mains wiring while studying these principles.
Solved checks
Question 1: A charge of 30 coulombs passes in 10 seconds. Current = 30/10 = 3 amperes. Question 2: A 10-ohm resistor carries 2 amperes. Potential difference = IR = 20 volts, and power = I²R = 40 watts. Question 3: Two 6-ohm resistors are connected in parallel. Equivalent resistance = 3 ohms. Question 4: A 500-watt device operates for 4 hours. Energy = 0.5 kilowatt × 4 hours = 2 kilowatt-hours. Check the units at every step: a watt is power, an ampere is current, an ohm is resistance and a kilowatt-hour is energy.
