Why Is National Pharmacovigilance Week in News?

The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission inaugurated the 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week on 17 September 2026 at its Ghaziabad premises.

The inaugural event was held at the Padmashri Nitya Anand Auditorium Hall in the ALRC Building.

The week was observed across India from 17 to 23 September 2026 to promote awareness of medicine safety and encourage reporting of adverse drug reactions.

Theme of the 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week

The theme was Promoting Rational Use of Medicines through Pharmacovigilance – A Step Towards Safer Healthcare.

The theme connects appropriate medicine use with systematic monitoring of safety information.

What Is Pharmacovigilance?

Pharmacovigilance is the science and activities concerned with detecting, assessing, understanding and preventing adverse effects or other medicine-related problems.

It helps health authorities and healthcare professionals identify safety concerns that may emerge during the wider use of medicines.

Information from pharmacovigilance can contribute to decisions about warnings, precautions, clinical practice and regulatory action.

What Is an Adverse Drug Reaction?

An adverse drug reaction, or ADR, is a harmful and unintended response associated with a medicine under relevant conditions of use.

Examples may include an allergic reaction, unexpected skin rash or another harmful response.

Not every symptom occurring after medicine use is necessarily caused by that medicine. Reports require assessment to determine the possible relationship.

Why Is ADR Reporting Important?

Clinical trials provide important information about medicines before wider use, but they may not reveal every uncommon or delayed adverse effect.

After medicines are used by larger and more diverse populations, additional safety information can emerge.

Reporting suspected adverse reactions helps build evidence for identifying possible safety signals.

What Is a Safety Signal?

A safety signal is information suggesting a possible new causal association, or a new aspect of a known association, between a medicine and an adverse event that requires further investigation.

A signal is not automatically proof that a medicine caused an event.

Scientific assessment considers available evidence, alternative explanations and the strength of the observed association.

What Is the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission?

The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, or IPC, is an institution associated with medicine standards and medicine-safety activities in India.

It publishes the Indian Pharmacopoeia and serves as the National Coordination Centre for the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India.

What Is the Indian Pharmacopoeia?

The Indian Pharmacopoeia is a recognised compilation of standards for medicines and related substances.

Such standards support the assessment of pharmaceutical quality, identity, purity and other specified characteristics.

What Is the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India?

The Pharmacovigilance Programme of India, commonly abbreviated as PvPI, is India's national programme for monitoring suspected adverse drug reactions.

The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission acts as its National Coordination Centre.

The programme relies on reports and their assessment to strengthen medicine-safety information.

Who Participated in the Inauguration?

The event included Dr Rajiv Bahl, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research, who participated virtually.

Dr V. Kalaiselvan, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director of the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, and Dr Jai Prakash, Officer-in-Charge of PvPI, were among the participants.

Representatives of healthcare institutions, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and other stakeholders also took part.

What Did ICMR Emphasise?

Dr Rajiv Bahl highlighted the importance of developing capacity to verify, assess and analyse medicine-safety reports.

The objective is to ensure that pharmacovigilance information can meaningfully support clinical and regulatory decisions.

What Is an ADR Monitoring Centre?

An Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Centre, or AMC, supports the collection and reporting of suspected adverse reactions.

These centres contribute information to the wider pharmacovigilance network.

Dr V. Kalaiselvan expressed an aspiration for every Aspirational District to have at least one ADR Monitoring Centre.

This was stated as an aspiration and should not be presented as an already achieved nationwide coverage figure.

What Is a Medical Device Monitoring Centre?

A Medical Device Monitoring Centre, or MDMC, supports the monitoring of safety concerns involving medical devices.

Medical devices include a wide range of products used for diagnosis, treatment and patient care.

The IPC leadership also expressed an aspiration for at least one such centre in every Aspirational District.

What Is Materiovigilance?

Materiovigilance concerns monitoring, assessment and prevention of adverse events or safety problems associated with medical devices.

It complements pharmacovigilance because patient safety involves both medicines and devices.

What Is Rational Use of Medicines?

Rational medicine use means that patients receive medicines appropriate to their clinical needs, in suitable doses and for appropriate durations, with due attention to safety and cost.

It also involves avoiding unnecessary medicines and using professional guidance where required.

Appropriate treatment depends on the patient's condition and clinical assessment.

What Is Drug Repurposing?

Drug repurposing involves investigating whether an existing medicine may have a useful application for another condition.

IPC leadership mentioned exploring opportunities to use pharmacovigilance data in this area.

A possible new use still requires appropriate scientific evidence and applicable regulatory review.

Release of the PvPI Newsletter

The inauguration included the release of Volume 16, Issue 2, 2026, of the PvPI Newsletter.

The publication forms part of the programme's communication and awareness activities.

Technical Sessions

The programme included a session on pharmacovigilance and rational medicine use as two elements of medication safety.

Another session addressed the role of the Materiovigilance Programme of India in patient safety beyond medicines.

What Is the Role of the World Health Organization?

The World Health Organization supports international cooperation on medicine safety and pharmacovigilance.

International exchange of safety information can help identify issues that may not be apparent from the experience of a single institution or country.

Why Does Public Participation Matter?

Healthcare professionals and patients may notice different aspects of medicine use.

Reporting suspected problems through recognised channels can contribute useful information for further assessment.

People should not discontinue prescribed treatment solely because of a general news report about adverse reactions; medicine-related concerns should be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.
