What Happened

1. Why in News?
The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), at its 63rd meeting held from 5 to 7 October 2026, unanimously decided to increase the policy repo rate under the Liquidity Adjustment Facility by 25 basis points to 5.50 per cent. The meeting was chaired by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra. Along with the rate increase, the MPC changed its monetary policy stance to 'calibrated tightening'. The decision is important because it signals a shift towards greater emphasis on controlling emerging inflationary pressures while India's economic growth remains resilient.

2. New Policy Repo Rate
The policy repo rate has been increased by 25 basis points to 5.50 per cent. One basis point is equal to one-hundredth of a percentage point. Therefore, 25 basis points are equivalent to 0.25 percentage point. The repo rate is the rate at which the Reserve Bank of India provides short-term liquidity to banks against eligible collateral under the monetary policy framework.

3. Changes in Other Policy Rates
Following the increase in the repo rate, the Standing Deposit Facility rate stands adjusted at 5.25 per cent. The Marginal Standing Facility rate has been adjusted to 5.75 per cent. The Bank Rate is also 5.75 per cent. These rates form important components of India's monetary policy operating framework.

4. Monetary Policy Stance Changed
The MPC changed its stance to 'calibrated tightening'. According to the RBI, under the prevailing conditions this means that rate cuts are off the table in the near term and future policy action could involve either another rate increase or a pause, depending on economic conditions and the inflation-growth outlook.

5. Was the Repo Rate Decision Unanimous?
Yes. All members of the Monetary Policy Committee voted in favour of increasing the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 per cent. However, there was a difference of opinion regarding the monetary policy stance. Dr. Nagesh Kumar and Professor Ram Singh preferred retaining the neutral stance.

6. Members of the Monetary Policy Committee
The 63rd meeting was held under the chairmanship of RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra. The other members attending the meeting were Dr. Nagesh Kumar, Saugata Bhattacharya, Professor Ram Singh, Dr. Poonam Gupta and Indranil Bhattacharyya. The MPC consists of six members and is responsible for deciding India's policy interest rate in accordance with the monetary policy framework.

7. Why Did RBI Increase the Repo Rate?
The MPC observed that inflation and its outlook were no longer as benign as in the previous year. Food, fuel and core inflation showed signs of pressure. RBI also highlighted risks from a deficient south-west monsoon, El Niño conditions, elevated energy and commodity prices and continuing geopolitical uncertainty. At the same time, India's economic growth remained resilient, providing the MPC room to focus more strongly on inflation management.

8. India's GDP Growth Remains Resilient
According to the National Statistics Office estimates cited by RBI, India's real GDP grew by 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2026-27. The RBI noted that this performance was stronger than expected. Private consumption, fixed investment, merchandise exports and services exports contributed to economic activity.

9. Manufacturing and Services Performance
On the supply side, manufacturing grew at a robust pace. Services activity also strengthened because of strong domestic and external demand. Available high-frequency indicators for July and August 2026 suggested that domestic economic activity retained momentum during the second quarter.

10. RBI GDP Growth Forecast for 2026-27
The RBI projected India's real GDP growth for 2026-27 at 7.1 per cent. The projection for the second quarter is 7.2 per cent, for the third quarter 6.9 per cent and for the fourth quarter 6.8 per cent. Real GDP growth for the first quarter of 2027-28 is projected at 7.1 per cent. RBI assessed the risks around the growth projection as evenly balanced.

11. Factors Supporting Economic Growth
RBI identified several factors supporting domestic growth. These include resilient domestic demand, merchandise exports, buoyant services exports, broadly stable employment conditions, strong capacity utilisation, robust credit flows and the government's continued emphasis on infrastructure investment.

12. Global Risks to India's Growth
The global environment remains uncertain. RBI highlighted geopolitical developments, tighter global financial conditions, high public debt in major economies and volatility in energy prices as important external risks. Such developments can influence India through trade, capital flows, commodity prices, financial markets and exchange rates.

13. West Asia Conflict and Crude Oil
RBI specifically highlighted the re-escalation of conflict in West Asia and the resulting sharp volatility in crude oil prices. India is significantly dependent on imported energy, making movements in international crude oil prices relevant for inflation, external balances, government finances and overall economic activity.

14. Global Monetary Tightening
RBI noted that rising inflation in key economies had prompted a more hawkish monetary policy approach internationally. The US Federal Reserve increased its policy rate by 25 basis points in September 2026. Tightening by major systemically important central banks has contributed to expectations of higher global interest rates and tighter financial conditions.

15. CPI Inflation in August 2026
India's Consumer Price Index inflation increased to 4.8 per cent in August 2026 from 4.5 per cent in July. RBI stated that the increase was predominantly associated with higher food and fuel inflation, although core inflation also increased.

16. Food Inflation Pressures
Food price increases became more broad-based, with notable increases in certain commodities such as sugar and onion. Food inflation is especially important in India because food has a substantial weight in the Consumer Price Index and can significantly affect household inflation expectations.

17. Core Inflation
Core inflation increased to 4.2 per cent in August 2026. Core inflation excluding precious metals stood at 2.9 per cent. Core inflation is closely watched because it helps policymakers assess underlying and relatively persistent price pressures beyond volatile food and fuel components.

18. Inflation Becoming Broader
RBI noted that the weighted share of items in the headline CPI basket recording inflation above 4 per cent had increased steadily to around 37 per cent in August 2026. This indicator helps assess whether inflationary pressures are concentrated in a few commodities or becoming more generalised across the economy.

19. CPI Inflation Projection for 2026-27
RBI projected CPI inflation at 5.2 per cent for 2026-27. Quarterly inflation is projected at 4.9 per cent in Q2, 6.0 per cent in Q3 and 5.7 per cent in Q4. CPI inflation for Q1 of 2027-28 is projected at 5.6 per cent. The risks to the inflation forecast were assessed as evenly balanced.

20. Core Inflation Projection
Core inflation is projected at 4.4 per cent for 2026-27. RBI's focus on core inflation reflects the importance of assessing whether supply shocks are spreading into broader pricing behaviour and inflation expectations.

21. Deficient Monsoon and El Niño
RBI identified the deficient south-west monsoon and strong El Niño conditions as risks to agriculture and rural demand. A weaker monsoon can affect crop production and food prices. However, healthy foodgrain buffers and proactive government policy interventions are expected to help mitigate some of these effects.

22. Supply-Side Inflation and Monetary Policy
Monetary policy cannot directly produce food or energy supplies. However, RBI explained that monetary policy can help prevent supply-side price shocks from producing persistent second-round effects. These effects can arise through higher inflation expectations, wage-price dynamics and changes in firms' pricing behaviour.

23. Inflation Expectations
If households and businesses begin expecting inflation to remain high, their behaviour may itself contribute to continued inflation. Maintaining confidence in price stability is therefore an important objective of monetary policy.

24. Growth Versus Inflation Balance
Central banks often have to balance inflation management against supporting economic growth. In October 2026, RBI assessed that the Indian economy remained sufficiently resilient while inflation risks had increased. This combination supported the decision to raise the repo rate.

25. What Does a Repo Rate Increase Mean?
An increase in the repo rate raises the policy cost of short-term funds from RBI. Depending on liquidity conditions, competition and banks' funding structures, the change can influence lending and deposit rates across the financial system. The transmission is not necessarily immediate or identical across all banks and loan categories.

26. Possible Impact on Borrowers
If banks transmit higher policy rates to lending rates, borrowing costs on some floating-rate loans and new loans may increase. The actual impact depends on the benchmark to which a loan is linked, contractual terms and individual bank decisions.

27. Possible Impact on Depositors
A tightening monetary policy environment can also influence deposit rates as banks compete for funds. However, changes in deposit rates are determined by individual banks and need not exactly match the change in the repo rate.

28. Impact on Investment and Demand
Higher interest rates can moderate interest-sensitive borrowing and expenditure. This is one channel through which monetary policy seeks to reduce excess demand and prevent inflation from becoming persistent. At the same time, RBI has to consider the effect of monetary tightening on investment and economic growth.

29. What is the Monetary Policy Committee?
The Monetary Policy Committee is the statutory body responsible for determining the policy rate required to achieve India's inflation target while keeping in mind the objective of growth. It was constituted under the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, as amended in 2016.

30. Composition of the MPC
The MPC has six members: three representatives from the Reserve Bank of India and three members appointed by the Central Government. The RBI Governor is the ex-officio Chairperson of the committee. Each member has one vote, and decisions are taken on the basis of majority voting.

31. India's Inflation Targeting Framework
India follows a flexible inflation-targeting framework. The central objective is to maintain price stability while keeping growth considerations in view. CPI inflation serves as the nominal anchor of the framework.

32. Importance of Price Stability
Persistent high inflation reduces household purchasing power, creates uncertainty for businesses, disproportionately affects vulnerable households and can distort savings and investment decisions. Price stability therefore contributes to sustainable long-term economic growth.

33. What is the Standing Deposit Facility?
The Standing Deposit Facility enables the RBI to absorb liquidity from the banking system without providing collateral in exchange. Following the October 2026 policy decision, the SDF rate stands at 5.25 per cent.

34. What is the Marginal Standing Facility?
The Marginal Standing Facility allows eligible banks to obtain overnight funds from the RBI under specified conditions. After the October policy decision, the MSF rate stands at 5.75 per cent.

35. What is the Bank Rate?
The Bank Rate is an important reference rate under India's monetary and regulatory framework. Following the October 2026 policy action, it stands at 5.75 per cent.

36. Liquidity Adjustment Facility
The Liquidity Adjustment Facility is an important mechanism through which RBI manages short-term liquidity and guides overnight money-market interest rates in line with the monetary policy stance.

37. Future Course of Monetary Policy
RBI clarified that the calibrated tightening stance does not mechanically imply a predetermined series of rate increases. Future decisions will depend on actual and projected growth and inflation, the broadening of price pressures, second-round effects of supply shocks and the strength of demand impulses.

38. When Will MPC Minutes Be Released?
The minutes of the October 2026 MPC meeting are scheduled to be published on 21 October 2026. MPC minutes provide additional details regarding members' individual assessments and reasoning.

39. Next MPC Meeting
The next meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee is scheduled for 2 to 4 December 2026. The committee will again review domestic and global economic developments before deciding the appropriate monetary policy action.

40. Overall Significance
The October 2026 monetary policy marks an important shift in India's monetary policy cycle. The unanimous 25-basis-point repo rate increase, combined with the change to calibrated tightening, shows that RBI has placed greater emphasis on preventing emerging inflation pressures from becoming persistent while acknowledging that the Indian economy continues to demonstrate resilience.

Background

The Monetary Policy Committee is central to India's flexible inflation-targeting framework. It was given statutory status through amendments to the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. The six-member committee determines the policy repo rate with the objective of maintaining price stability while keeping growth in mind. Monetary policy works through several channels, including interest rates, credit conditions, expectations, asset prices and exchange-rate effects. The repo rate is one of the most closely watched policy instruments because changes in it can influence financial conditions throughout the economy. The October 2026 decision came against a complex backdrop: India's real economy remained resilient, but inflation risks increased because of food and fuel prices, deficient monsoon conditions, El Niño, geopolitical tensions and volatile global energy prices. The MPC therefore judged that monetary policy needed to be recalibrated. The move from the previous stance to calibrated tightening is especially significant because it signals that near-term policy is now oriented towards either maintaining the current rate or tightening further if inflation pressures persist.

Why It Matters

The October 2026 RBI policy is significant for both the economy and competitive examinations. First, the 25-basis-point repo rate increase marks a clear monetary tightening action at a time when India's growth remains relatively strong. Second, the change in stance to calibrated tightening signals RBI's increased concern about the persistence and broadening of inflation. Third, the policy demonstrates the difficult interaction between domestic conditions and global risks. India is facing inflationary risks from food prices, deficient rainfall, El Niño and imported energy costs while also navigating geopolitical uncertainty and tighter global financial conditions. Fourth, RBI's 7.1 per cent GDP growth projection indicates continued confidence in domestic economic resilience. Fifth, the 5.2 per cent inflation projection shows why price stability has returned to the centre of monetary policy discussions. The decision can affect borrowing costs, deposits, bond yields, credit demand, investment and financial-market expectations. It is therefore important not merely as a banking update but as a major macroeconomic development.
