What is an Adjective? / Adjective क्या है?

An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun.

Adjective वह शब्द है जो किसी Noun या Pronoun की विशेषता, संख्या, मात्रा या अन्य गुण बताता है।

Examples:

a beautiful flower

five students

little water

an intelligent boy


Adjective of Quality / गुणवाचक विशेषण

It tells us what kind of person or thing is being described.

यह किसी व्यक्ति या वस्तु का गुण बताता है।

Examples:

honest man

beautiful city

difficult question


Adjective of Quantity / परिमाणवाचक विशेषण

It tells us how much.

यह मात्रा बताता है।

Examples:

some water

little milk

enough food


Adjective of Number / संख्यावाचक विशेषण

It tells us how many or in what order.

यह संख्या या क्रम बताता है।

Examples:

five students

first position

several books


Demonstrative Adjectives / संकेतवाचक विशेषण

this, that, these, those

Example:

This book is useful.

Here “this” modifies “book”.

यहाँ “this”, “book” की विशेषता बता रहा है।


Degrees of Comparison / तुलना की अवस्थाएँ

Three degrees:

तीन अवस्थाएँ:

Positive: tall

Comparative: taller

Superlative: tallest

Example:

Ram is tall.

Mohan is taller than Ram.

Amit is the tallest of the three.


Important Irregular Degrees

महत्वपूर्ण अनियमित रूप

good → better → best

bad → worse → worst

little → less → least

many/much → more → most

far → farther/further → farthest/furthest


Comparative + Than

Correct:

Ravi is taller than Mohan.

Incorrect:

Ravi is taller from Mohan.


Senior / Junior / Superior / Inferior

These adjectives generally take to, not than.

इनके साथ सामान्यतः to आता है, than नहीं।

Correct:

He is senior to me.

Incorrect:

He is senior than me.

Other examples:

junior to

superior to

inferior to

preferable to


Double Comparative / दोहरे Comparative से बचें

Incorrect:

more better

Correct:

better

Incorrect:

more superior

Correct:

superior


Double Superlative / दोहरे Superlative से बचें

Incorrect:

most tallest

Correct:

tallest


One of the + Superlative + Plural Noun

Correct:

Sachin is one of the greatest players.

“one of the” के बाद सामान्यतः Superlative और Plural Noun आता है।


Few / A Few / The Few

Few / A Few / The Few का अंतर

Few

Almost none; negative sense.

बहुत कम; लगभग नहीं के बराबर।

Few students understood the problem.

A few

Some; positive sense.

कुछ।

A few students helped me.

The few

Whatever small number exists.

जो थोड़े हैं, वे सभी।


Little / A Little / The Little

Used mainly with uncountable nouns.

मुख्यतः Uncountable Nouns के साथ।

little water = almost no water

a little water = some water

the little water = whatever small amount of water exists


Elder / Older

Elder is commonly used for family relationships.

Older can be used more generally.

Example:

My elder brother

This building is older than that one.
