What Percent is One Number of Another?

Formula:

Percentage = (Part / Whole) × 100

Example:

30 is what percent of 120?

= 30/120 × 100

Increase % = (Increase / Original) × 100

Percentage Decrease /

Decrease % = (Decrease / Original) × 100

Successive Percentage Change /

If a quantity changes by x% and then by y%, the net percentage change is:

Net change = x + y + xy/100

Use negative sign for a decrease.

Example:

20% increase followed by 10% increase:

20 + 10 + (20×10)/100

= 32%

Increase and Decrease by Same Percentage

If a quantity increases by x% and then decreases by x%, there is always a net decrease:

Net decrease = x²/100 %

Example:

20% increase then 20% decrease:

= 20²/100

= 4% decrease

Population / Salary / Price Change Formula

New Value:

New Value = Original × (100 ± x)/100

Reverse Percentage /

If a value after a 20% increase becomes 360:

= 300
